NunStory #33 The psychiatrist

Doctor Ong arranged for me to see a psychiatrist.

When Doctor Tang, a Catholic doctor, heard of it.

He was much affronted by it, sending a Catholic nun of that revered order of nuns to a psychiatrist?

He objected and wanted to take over my care. I declined, insisting on staying with Doctor Ong.

The van from the psychiatrist hospital came to pick me up.

It was a lovely ride to the hospital.

We drove through shops, buildings and trees. I love the sight of trees speeding by us.

The psychiatrist dismissed all his patients and attended to me.

I had a great animated chat with him. He wrote a glowing report about me.

I was that way due to the situation, that I showed no classical signs of anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa, what is that?

I decided it has something to do with nervous sickness which did not surprise me.

I had been operating on sheer nerves. My body, a bundle of nerves as I go through the motions of the day.

My mother heard about my stay at the hospital and came to visit me.

Daily, she came with my cousin, feeding me chicken with soup.

I was greatly dismayed, I watched my weight climb steadily up to a hundred and three pounds with no means to stop it.

Much later, after I left the monastery, my mother told me she sensed something was amiss with me but did not want to say anything about it to me.

It was why she traveled to the town where the monastery was, to take care of me.  A mother's heart driven by love.
